Computers for Kids

The "Computer for Kids" program was designed by me to be a way to help bridge the digital divide.  Many kids in urban areas lack the availability to computers, the internet and other IT related resources.  My goal is to put computer labs all around our district so kids can visit one of these labs after school and have the resources they need to compete in this new high tech age.

To date we have setup 26 computer labs (See list below) and have many more coming over the next few months.  Each lab is equipped with 5 computers that contain basic software and one of our partners has provided self-paced educational software (Compass Learning).  All of the computers have been donated to our office and our list of donors is growing everyday.

We do ask our lab sites to take some responsibility of their site.  We ask them to provide internet access, provide volunteer staff to oversee the kids while they are there, be open to the public and help promote the site to the neighborhood and closest school.  Comcast Cable does provide our sites with free installation and discounted rates.  For the volunteers, Oakland Community College provides free training which consists of lab management, internet and searching, basic word processing, tools for job searches, excel and health resources as well as how to access the self-paced educational software.

Reading (or having a parent or someone read to a child) is one of the most important things a child can start doing to help the brain develop and with this is mind we have teamed with the MI Free Book Program and the Pistons to help provide books to our sites.  All of our sites have the option to provide a variety of books for the kids and parents to use.
