Biography

About Tim

Tim is now serving in his second term representing the Pontiac/Auburn Hills communities.  He is currently Assistant Majority Floor leader, and serves a campaign chair of the House Democrats.  Tim graduated from Oakland Christian High School and then attended and graduated with honors from Oakland University with a BA in Political Science.  After college he went to work in the financial industry where he was a Financial Advisor for UBS before becoming VP at MyLocalGov which was an IT company that sold software and payment solutions to governmental units.  After bringing the company to profitability, Tim helped orchestrate the sale of the company to Official Payments Inc. where he became their National Sales Manager.

Tim also found time to serve three terms as an Oakland County Commissioner representing the communities of Auburn Hills, Pontiac and Rochester Hills.  During his time as a Commissioner, he was appointed to the board of directors for the National Association of County Officials and served on their Finance committee.  As a Commissioner he worked on a wide range of pressing issues that included helping to create a senior citizen prescription drug plan, protecting public safety and advocating for cable broadcasts of commission meetings.

Tim has also been chairmen of the House education committee since 2007.  As chair of the education committee, Tim continues to work towards equity in education, and academic opportunities for all students.  In 2007, Tim pushed through a school funding plan in the budget, targeted at addressing inequities in school funding.

Tim also introduced and passed the Michigan "Promise Zone" legislation.  This legislation provides college education funding in zones of high poverty around the state.  Modeled after the success of the Kalamazoo Promise, the legislation allows communities around the state to create public-private partnerships, guaranteeing free college education their students.  Tim has been instrumental in working to set up and raise money for the Pontiac Promise Zone Authority.

Most recently, Tim fought to pass a number of sweeping education reform measures for Michigan's schools.  Passed in December of 2009, the bi-partisan package of bills will position Michigan to be a leader in K-12 education.

Tim also serves as the Vice Chair of the House Tax policy committee as well as a member of the Energy & Technology committee, Regulatory Reform committee and the K-12 Appropriations sub-committee.  Tim's unique experience in the business sector and prior work in local government has enabled him to be effective at solving problems and working across the aisle.

Tim is married to Patty and they have one young son named Myles Jackson Melton.  They also love animals and have a beagle named Governor.

- Tim Melton

"The energetic Melton has pushed forward on other, smart education ideas, such as establishing a college tuition system of the entire state modeled after the Kalamazoo Promise. Incumbent Tim Melton is the better choice."
