Time to Move Government Reform Bills

January 26, 2011

LANSING - State Representative Tim Melton (D-Pontiac) today called for the Legislature to take action on a number of bills that will save taxpayer dollars by streamlining state government and school districts. Melton has introduced several of the bills in the House that would simplify state worker health care, consolidate school district services, audit existing state health care plans and reform teacher tenure law in Michigan.

"The people of Michigan don't have time for inaction - we need to complete these important reforms from last session," Melton said. "These bills are common-sense reforms aimed to save money and make government more efficient. Taking action on these bills will show residents that the Legislature is serious about bipartisan reforms and working together to help solve the challenges we face as a state."

The bills align with many items in Gov. Snyder's State of the State address and would do the following:

  • Create a statewide health care pool for all public employees.
  • Require audits of existing public employee health care plans.
  • Establish a commission to implement school consolidations.
  • Revise Michigan's teacher tenure law.

"These reforms will go a long way toward moving Michigan forward," Melton said. "Taking up these bills will demonstrate a strong bipartisan tone in the new Legislature. I look forward to working with House leadership and the Chairs of each respective committee on this legislation."
