Promise Zone Rummage Sale this Weekend

October 14, 2009

Here is an article from today's Oakland Press.  We really need your support to make this effort a success!!

Treasure hunters and residents alike are invited tonight to get an inside look at what will be featured during the citywide rummage sale this weekend at the All-Saints Episcopal Church at 171 Pike St. in Pontiac.

The Rev. Karen Johanns, the rector at All Saints, said the church will offer a sneak peak of the rummage sale as part of its wine and cheese social from 5 to 7 p.m.

Admission is $5.

The citywide rummage sale begins on Friday and runs through Sunday with a major portion of the proceeds going to the Pontiac Promise Zone Scholarship Fund, according to organizers.

The scholarship was designed to help pay col- Demrose lege tuition for students of the Pontiac school district. Directions to sale locations will be placed around the city, organizers said.

Residents, businesses and churches are asked to join in the citywide sale.

Local businessman Kevin Thompson who is founder of the rummage sale, and Pontiac Regional Chamber staff are working together to organize the event. Thompson said the Detroit Pistons have donated memorabilia to the cause. Autographed basketballs will be auctioned off at a later date.

"We have a number of signed basketballs that we hope will spark some interest in the rummage sale," said Thompson. "We are a hoping this sale will become an annual thing for the funding of Promise Zone."

The signed basketballs will be on display at All Saints Episcopal Church.

State Rep. Tim Melton, DAuburn Hills, launched the Promise Zone in Pontiac that aims to help deserving students get a college education and new skills for 21st century jobs. He said his family has already become involved in the sale.

"We've donated some things from our home for the auction," said Melton. "We need more events like this to get the word out. I was over at (Pontiac) high school and a lot of the kids there don't even know the program is out there. So events like this become that much more important."

Organizers said fundraisers for the Promise Zone are important because the $750,000 must be raised in order to send all students in the district to college for free.

Dawnaree Demrose, president of the Pontiac Regional Chamber, said there would be no central location for the rummage sale the first time out.

"We'll have directional signs up pointing visitors where to go. We still are hoping businesses will make donations," said Demrose.

The Pontiac Regional Chamber also is teaming up with the Greater Pontiac Community Coalition and POH Regional Medical Center's Riley Foundation to support the citywide sale.

To register and participate in the rummage sale, call Johnathan Moss at the Pontiac Regional Chamber (248) 335-9600 or visit www.pontiacchamber. com.
