Re-thinking our school calender

June 12, 2009

The "globalized", knowledge-based world we live in is a far cry from the world of a hundred years ago.  Our school calender was based on an agrarian lifestlyle, where planting and harvesting was more important that instruction time in a classroom.  Likewise, college level education was in its infancy.  Their is no reason why we should not re-think our traditional views of education and be creative.  Secretary of Education Duncan continues to call for a year round school calender.  This issue strikes Michigan especially hard as more districts shrink the number of days students are in class.
