Grand Rapids Press pushes for Dropout Hearing

May 7, 2009

The bill would move the dropout age up from 16 to 18.  The current standard was set in the late 19th century when our economy was much more agrarian-based.  Moving forward to now, a kid a drop out of school when they turn 16, with no input from their parents.  Despite the fact that a parent is still the legal guardian of their 16 year old.  The bill would simply say a child cannot dropout until they have graduated or turn 18 years old.  Additionally, the bill would allow a child to leave school, only after consent from their parent.  I think this is a very reasonable legislation, and recognizes that we are competing in a global economy.
